36 games down. 31 to go. While 11 betting favorites — 12 if you factor in seeding — advanced on Thursday, that left five games where the madness was completely on brand for the month of March.
For the third consecutive tournament a 15 seed was able to knock off a two seed — this time coming in the form of Ivy League Princeton taking out one of the favorites to win it all, Arizona. While the Wildcats will spend the rest of the month watching from home, they’ll be joined by others like Virginia — who once again lost in excruciating fashion.
With many of the favorites surviving day one, that makes for some great matchups on the Saturday slate. The Round of 32 tips off with 13-seed Furman taking on fifth-seeded San Diego State. In between there will be some of the bigger teams in the nation on the court, with three of the number one seeds — Kansas, Houston and Alabama — in action.
All in all, only three double digit seeds made it through Thursday — Furman, Princeton and 10-seed Penn State — who will hope to continue wearing Cinderella’s glass slipper for at least one more week. If the shoe fits, they’ll keep dancing and busting brackets all the way to Houston, making for quite the story.
If history decides to repeat itself, then at least one of those underdogs will continue barking. Will the favorites buck the trend or is it just inevitable they’ll always be the mailman to those dogs? Stay tuned.
