An American Went on a Tinder Date in Colombia. He Never Returned.

A Tinder date in Colombia ended tragically when an American man was murdered in Medellin.

Paul Nguyen, from California, was traveling in the South American country with a friend when he made the fateful decision to meet up with a stranger that he connected with on the dating app last week. Nguyen, 27, reportedly met the woman in the affluent El Poblado neighborhood of the city, known for its hip cafes, gourmet restaurants and nightlife.

But what exactly happened after is still a mystery. Nguyen’s lifeless body was found hours later roughly 5 miles away in a different part of the city.

His family learned of his disappearance after his friend became concerned when he didn’t return to their Airbnb, according to Colombian newspaper Semana. The family took to Reddit in the hours after to look for help and said that Nguyen’s credit card recorded several transactions at an ATM in the Laureles neighborhood. His body was discovered a short walk from the ATM several hours later the morning of November 10.

Although Nguyen reportedly shared a photo on Instagram with the woman he met on Tinder before his disappearance, Colombian authorities have yet to make an arrest in the case or announce a suspect. Nguyen’s family posted on Reddit that his PayPal account also allegedly made a $500 transfer to an account associated with a woman named Natalia Andrea Arias at 5 a.m when he was still missing. Authorities believe Nguyen was drugged before being robbed, according to Semana.

“He is a victim of a cruel and senseless crime. These people chose money and greed over a single thought of my brother’s life,” his sister, Amy Nguyen, wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help fund bringing his body back to the U.S. As of publication, the page has raised $35,660, far exceeding its goal of $15,000.

“Paul was my older brother who was always there to take care of me. He was there to support me through my ups and downs. He was my shoulder to cry on. I hope everyone who knew Paul stays strong,” she wrote.

Druggings and robberies of foreigners facilitated by dating apps is not uncommon in Colombia. In August, a woman and two men were arrested in Medellin for allegedly running a similar scheme on Tinder, where they would meet foreigners on the app, drug them, steal their valuables and drain their credit cards and other pay accounts.
